Saving denim: Restyling jeans after walking through the hems

We’ve all done it. Had a favorite pair of jeans that were just a bit too long. After a night out, we get home see we’ve worn through the bottom hems.

After spending a ton of money on these Juicy Couture jeans, I haven’t worn them in years because the hems looked like this.

After spending a ton of money on these Juicy Couture jeans, I haven’t worn them in years because the hems looked like this.

During my big quarantine clean, I found these long forgotten favorites and set to salvaging them.

Instead of the typical jean shorts, I’m making cropped flares. They’re all the rage and honestly, I figured if I messed it up, I could still make shorts.

Step one: determine length

Look at a few of your favorite pairs online and compare the inseam length. I choose 26.5”

Measure the inseam on both legs. Make a notch with your scissors. Then from the bottom hem, up, measure to your cut. Do the same on the outside hem.

This will ensure your cut is straight across.

Step two:Creating a rough hem

Take your scissors and make little snips on a slight diagonal. The longer these little snips, the more dramatic your raw hem or fringe.

I only wanted it to be a rough hem, so I did mine only about a quarter inch.

Now, spread out each of these little tabs and pull out the white threads. You don’t have to be particular about this. Just grab them and pull them out.

Step three: Give ‘em the go around

Throw ‘em in the washer, then drier and you’re done! All in all, this shouldn’t take more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Here’s a look at mine. (I’ve decided to sell them in my Poshmark closet)

I hope this easy tutorial works for you too. Be sure to let me know how you find ways to change, fix or rewear your favorite styles, I’m always looking for new ideas!
